Insurance for your 'do-it-yourself' holidays (flight and/or accommodation)

Holiday insurance is now considered an essential part of any holiday taken abroad, particularly to places such as the USA where there is no NHS and medical costs can soon add up.

However, did you know that the Civil Aviation Authority's ATOL scheme only applies where a flight, plus another component part of the trip, are part of the same booking? DIY trips where flights are purchased independently of accommodation are just not covered by ATOL.

We at Villa Southern Dunes are happy that we are not going to go out of business before or during your holiday, but you probably don't know us - how can you be sure? To be honest, you can't, but there are a number of steps you can take to protect yourself. Using a credit card to pay gives you some protection, but the safest way is to make sure you are covered, either by your existing travel insurance, or by taking out a specialist insurance policy which protects against the financial failure of Airlines or other end suppliers, such as privately-owned accommodation.

Under the FSA regulations we are not able to recommend a particular Insurance company but an example of such a company is www.protectmyholiday.com.
